In the Spotlights: The safety coordinator

Every month, PrioCom puts a profession in the spotlight and explains how corporate and mission-critical communication contributes to the safety of employees and efficiency in business operations.

The safety coordinator has an important task in making policy and drawing up a plan of action for giving substance to the safety management within an organisation or event.

In the position of Safety Coordinator, you must take into account the legislation and regulations. You must also have knowledge of the various physical work environments used to carry out the organisation’s activities or the event site or the educational institution’s campus.

The Safety Coordinator makes the policy and draws up a plan of action.
The most important tasks are
– Assessing risks
– analysing work activities and areas of work
– Managing conflicts
– supervising the coordination of safety and health when drawing up procedures and work instructions.

The position requires strong communication skills for consultation and persuasion of both management and employees and other stakeholders within the organisation.

Once the plan of action has been established, the Safety Coordinator will need to draw attention to any safety issues and make ongoing recommendations. In case of deviations, he/she will have to warn offenders and will have to inform the organisation of deficiencies. As a last resort, the Coordinator may communicate the hazards to an official of the Technical Labour Inspectorate.

The safety coordinator must have a mandate from the management to be able to function effectively. Without a mandate, creating support within the organisation is a hopeless task.

The costs of employee absence within a business process can quickly mount up for the organisation. As the saying goes: Accidents happen at the drop of a hat, indicates that the insights and knowledge of a Safety Coordinator must be present down to the smallest detail.

Given the foregoing list of tasks and responsibilities, it will be clear that “safety” is a real profession. It is a field of work by and for professionals, who must be equipped with professional tools and resources. At PrioCom and its partners, we know this like no other.

One of the tools for the safety coordinator is a workflow application, supporting the “delivery of safety”. PrioCom and its partners have good experiences with the company Safesight, which has developed a platform that supports safety through a number of modules;

  1. Safety Cards, which provide employees with all the up-to-date information they need to do their jobs well via an app;
  2. Safety Tasks – a task management module that sends instructions or information to groups or specific people. Recurring actions or checks are sent automatically;
  3. Safety Logging – a logbook in which all reports, peculiarities and issues that affect the continuity of the organisation are registered;
  4. Safety Dashboards, which provide an accurate and up-to-date picture of what is happening (or has happened) in and around the organisation (or project).

The Safesight platform can run entirely on PrioCom’s communication smart phones, with which business and mission-critical communication takes place on the basis of Push-To-Talk. The combination of the platform and the smart-portals guarantees that employees always have the right tools to ensure ‘safety’ – also in case of an incident or calamity.

PrioCom delivers PTT and lone-worker protection applications, whereby communication takes place via T-Mobile’s 4G network with a priority setting, so that priority is always given to the network.

Communication and security go hand-in-hand and PrioCom has a number of important rules of thumb, included in a compass with nine (9) certainties.
