Safe and effective emergency response at Bausch Health

Bausch Health BTC

Critical communication using 4G is key to Bausch emergency response

Many companies regard in-house emergency response as more of an obligation than a priority. Not so at Bausch Health, which recently replaced its emergency response team’s radios with modern, robust Push-to-Talk smart devices.

American/Canadian Bausch Health has a large distribution centre at Schiphol-Rijk. The warehouse functions as a European hub for the distribution of eye care products such as contact lenses and eye surgical products.

Despite being named as the “Safest Warehouse in the Netherlands” last year, the company continues to invest in safety. It recently launched a complete Push-to-Talk solution from critical communication service provider PrioCom, that was supplied by BTC.

Reliable network

“The solution, installed by our regular IT partner BTC together with MVNO PrioCom, guarantees our operational safety”, states Reinoud Schoon, Environmental Health Safety Coordinator at Bausch Health Companies. The solution, using almost 30 Telo TE590 smart devices, has been rolled out over the past six months. Schoon summarizes the collaboration, “It’s a good service, we get good support from BTC and PrioCom. The solution is stable and integrated into T-Mobile’s reliable 4G network.”

“We’ve been working as an IT partner for this customer for some time, particularly in the field of telephony and IT. Critical communication fits perfectly with this”, explains Rick Eikelenboom of BTC. He added that the lead was initially through PrioCom, with Bausch preferring to purchase this new service from its regular IT partner. “Bausch Health is our launching customer in the field of critical communication. The best possible solution has been put together thanks to intensive cooperation with the PrioCom specialists.”

Android

This European distributor of medical products used to work with handheld radios. “We wanted a future-proof solution for our in-house emergency responders who prefer to be able to offer more than just push-to-talk and emergency calls.” For example, the chosen device has a 13 megapixel camera. “We have also installed our own unsafe situation reporting application on the device. If the emergency responder sees a potentially dangerous situation, a photo can be sent to the responsible employee via me”, Schoon explains.

Marja Dieben, Sales Manager at PrioCom adds that the smart devices run on Android, making it possible to install your own company apps. “This means, response workers only need one device.” BTC guarantees the management of the mobile devices. Eikelenboom: “Of course, we don’t expect employees to install apps on it themselves. BTC has a lot of experience in Mobile Device Management (MDM), which makes the collaboration even more powerful.”

Part of the implementation phase involved a pilot project. Schoon elaborates: “At the start of the collaboration you have a list of requirements, but you only find out how the devices work in practice. We equipped a number of in-house emergency responders with borrowed devices and played out some scenarios. The Telo TE590 turned out to be the ideal smart device. ”The emergency response team used both the old radios and the new devices side by side for a week before switching to the critical 4G facility.

Control room

The gatehouse security which is always occupied when the premises is open, is the application control room. Schoon tells about an extra challenge for the company at Schiphol-Rijk. “In the event of an alarm, the fire brigade is here within six minutes, by which time the complex must be vacated and checked.”

“A reliable and fast critical communication solution is an integral part of achieving this”, Schoon should know, having previously used an in-house emergency response app on a normal mobile phone and encountering problems reaching in-house emergency responders during emergencies. “This critical communication solution uses data priority services from PrioCom on the T-Mobile network, which guarantees continuity in the event of an emergency.”

“Even when I’m not in the building, I can monitor the emergency response with Push-to-Talk, which is the advantage of a mobile device. Distance plays no role”, says Schoon.

BTC definitely sees opportunities for growth with solutions using the PrioCom critical communication service. Eikelenboom: “We have a wide range of customers in a multitude of industries and markets. Together with the PrioCom specialists we are now looking at how the solutions fit with our existing customers. This is not just about in-house emergency response, but critical communication also plays a major role in, for example, construction, enforcement and logistics.”
